Schamhart x 2 - Chachapoyas & Vichayito Review

  • PeruNorth arranged a 10-day itinerary for Canadian mother & daughter, Irene & Marie-Ann in Jan 2018.

  • Staying at Gocta Lodge, they explored Chachapoya ruins of Kuelap & Revash.

  • Also hiked to Gocta Falls, visited Yerbebuena market & mummies at Leymebamba Museum.

  • Ended the trip with 5 nights staying in a Bedouin-style tent beside the beach at Vichayito.

Here is what they say:

‘We had a great time and really appreciate all the help you provided in booking our vacation.

My feedback is provided below in answer to your questions.

What was your favourite cultural destination in the itinerary?

Hike from village to mountain where “villages” were carved in mountain to protect tombs [Revash]. The local guide was great talking about the area, the ppl, history, and pointing out all the medicinals and plants.

What was your favourite natural destination in the itinerary?

Gocta falls

Who was your guide? How did they perform?

Can’t remember his name ... but he was awesome!! Excellent English and very personable.

Which was your favourite accommodation and why?

Vichayito resort was a beautiful way to wind down our trip. The beach service was not what I am used to for all inclusive tho.

Which was your favourite restaurant / dish / drink?

All things seafood. Everything was great.

What forms of transport did you use? Pros/cons?

Small vans and cars all good

Did your itinerary involve any hiking? How would you rate it in terms of difficulty?

Yes and easy. We hiked up to Gocta falls and up the mountain to the Chachapoyas tombs.

What was the most pointless item in your luggage!?

We packed carry on only so everything was well used. It was a month long journey with last ten days or so booked thru your org.

What was/were your favourite natural encounter (eg. animal / bird / flora seen)?

Turtles - and swimming with them.

Did you suffer any insect bites? Other physical discomforts?

No

Did you have much interaction with locals? Where and how did this occur?

Hike to mountain as noted above.

Did you feel your money was going to local businesses and people?

Not at the resorts, but on small tours, yes.

Were you given any information regarding sustainability during the course of your trip (e.g. talks on environmental issues from guides)?

Some - hike to Gocta falls.

Did you notice any areas where environmental practices could be improved?

Only other comment is the drivers are crazy on the narrow winding roads!! Scared the crap out of us on a few occasions.
