While it is true that the Manatee Amazon Explorer cruises in Ecuador's Amazon, not Peru's, it is part of an eco-system that does not recognise the border!

The Manatee boasts over 20 years' experience operating in the pristine upper basin of the Napo River - which crosses into Peru to join the Amazon River near Iquitos - and Aguarico River.

After such sterling service, the Manatee was due a full refurbishment, which she duly received in 2017, so that all the fixtures and fittings are to the latest specifications and tastes.

There are now four deluxe cabins, boasting their own private whirlpool bath, along with 10 standard cabins - all with en-suite bathroom, air-conditioning and private balcony.

Cruises begin in Puerto Francisco de Orellana, more commonly known as Coca, a half-hour flight from Quito, in eastern Ecuador.

During the 4, 5 and 8 day itineraries, cosseted passengers explore parts of Limoncocha Biological Reserve and Yasuni National Park, Ecuador’s largest protected animal reserve.

For the adventurous, there is the chance to paddle through the still waters of an Amazonian tributary, using one of the Manatee's two-person kayaks.
